Typewriter Drawings ©2020 Frank J. Stockton Featuring: This Son of Ours, Spaces into Thoughts L'Absinthe Picking up Problems The Apparition All works are composed of typewriter ribbon & India ink on paper, and are 6 x 4.5 inches (153 x 115 mm). Each of these works couples a snippet of text with an automatic drawing in ink. Texts are selected in advance and transcribed onto Stonehenge printmaking paper via an Hermes 3000 typewriter. Lines are made with Sennelier Indian ink and Speedball Imperial 101 nibs. The sound and video were captured with the built-in camera of an iPhone 6 augmented with a Moment 58mm Zoom lens, and edited in Adobe Rush.

I’m excited to share that I’ve compiled my most recent series of small-format drawings into an exhibition-style catalog that can be accessed via web browser.

The 29-page catalog opens with a thoughtful Foreword by brilliant sculptor Bridget Beck, who maintains an ink drawing practice of her own.

The index includes artwork information and hyperlinks to time-lapse videos of the creation of most of the works.

You may recognize one or more of these works in your feed if you follow me on social media.

Each of the 74 drawings in the series began with a text fragment appropriated from a wide range of sources, such as Joseph Campbell, Bruce Lee, and Andy Warhol, and was finished with an improvised ink drawing.

Picking Up Problems

I hope you’ll find them as enjoyable to explore as they were to create.

Cheers,

Frank
